Help us make the 2018 LUMA Film Festival the best one yet!

LUMA Film Festival champions the work of budding filmmakers from the University of York's Department of Theatre, Film and Television.  It is an event created by students, for students. This June, LUMA is entering its seventh year and we need your help to make this the best one yet!

We are lucky enough to have gained support from the Department of Theatre, Film and Television and Orillo Productions but we need your help to push us over the finishing line!

WHAT IS LUMA?

LUMA is an annual student film festival, takes place from 15th to 17th June this year, at the University of York’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television. Our department is among the newest, fastest-growing, and highest-ranking film schools in the UK. LUMA gives its students a chance to showcase their work to industry professionals and a wider audience.

Now in its seventh year, LUMA includes not only screenings, but also hosts fascinating talks and inspirational workshops from leading talent in the film and television industry. This year features a lineup including BAFTA-nominated film directors Mark Herman ( The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas ) and Thomas Napper ( Jawbone ), as well as visual effects artist Cecile Peltier ( Christopher Robin, Paddington 2, Avengers: Age of Ultron ).

LUMA has become an integral part of TFTV’s annual events calendar and is rapidly gaining a reputation within York. We are proud to announce that we are officially teaming up with the Festival of Ideas , and York-based film production company Orillo Productions . We're also happy to announce that, for the third consecutive year, we will be running a showcase for the Interactive Media department . This represents the best the department has to offer in digital arts installations and virtual reality headsets.

Orillo Productions will be sponsoring Saturday’s lineup of events exploring the different areas of the industry, charting a path from starting your own production company, to careers in pre-production, production and post-production and featuring a range of industry practitioners and Orillo team members discussing their experiences and advice for newcomers.

THE LUMA TEAM:

The festival team consists of students from across the department and are split up into four departments: Management, Design, Press & Publicity, and Tech. The heads of these departments are experienced organisers, supported by committed teams.

LUMA’S IMPACT ON STUDENTS AND ALUMNI:

Over the years a variety of guests at the top of their respective professional fields have enriched the festival with their insight, inspiring attendees with talks and masterclasses.

Films screened here have gone on to win awards and garner further recognition at other festivals such as the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Kurzundschön Moving Image Competition and The San Francisco International Festival of Short Films.

LUMA has become a hub where local and external filmmakers, York alumni and students meet to exchange ideas and forge relationships. Every year TFTV alumni return to the department for LUMA to see what their successors have accomplished, and industry professionals gain an insight into the skills and creativity fostered by the department. The socialising and networking LUMA encourages is as much a lively way to end the year as a vital part of the film and television industry.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

LUMA is free for everyone and always will be. However, there is a great deal of expense involved in running a film festival and we are aiming to fundraise £500 in order to achieve our goals. This will enable us to:

  • Afford travel and accommodation for industry speakers to attend
  • Promote the festival through physical media such as flyers, posters and programmes
  • Purchase the necessities for creating a festival, including trophies, lanyards and staff t-shirts
  • Make-over the department for the festival: This year we are planning to turn TFTV into an art deco extravaganza, which will require investment into the materials in order to create an event to remember!

We realise not everyone is able to donate, but you can still support the festival by following our social media accounts and checking out our official website for more information:

Here you can also find out more about reserving tickets for our Gala Screenings, keynote talks and workshops (all of which are free to attend). We hope to see you there!
